Much has been written about this BEYOND LEGENDARY BAND from Houston, Texas. In a nutshell, they were the first to call themselves "psychedelic". And psychedelic they were. Great guitar work by Stacy Sutherland and the unmistakable voice of Roky Erikson. They also had this weird strange sound permeating every song in the form of a "jug bottle"....Tommy Hall doing the honors. They played a number of times in San Francisco and brought much attention to the unknown music scene in Texas. All the lyrics were poetic and actually had meaning and purpose. They could have been legends in their own time if it weren't for their promoter, who wanted to keep this "mysterious aura" about them and keep them from the media. The other thing going against them is that they were heavily into "LSD" and were constantly harassed by the police. Stacy wound up in prison on a bust....Roky also would have gone down, but he chose to plead insanity, stating in court that he was a "Martian". This backfired as he thought he could easily beat the rap, but it took a long time to convince the doctors (and lawyers) and his brothers commitment to get his release. All of this, of course, helped to the bands demise. They only recorded two full albums "Psychedelic Sounds..." and "Easter Everywhere". The "Live" album was studio stuff (albeit some out takes) with "canned" applause. "Bull Of The Woods" was an unfinished album, some songs with different members. Anyway...high caliber psychedelic music and very much recommended.
This fouth LP was put together when Roky was in the hospital. Stacy Southerland wrote some songs and together with some Roky Erickson outakes from previous sessions, the album was released. There is no Tommy Hall whoop whoop "jug" sounds, but the album is overall terrific.
I listed this album earlier as an original label pressing. I pulled it back when there was a question about originality. After some extensive investigation I've found that this was a later issue (second edition if you will). It is an original label printed at International Artists. Leland Rogers came back to revive the label in 1976. It's confirmed that Noble Ginther had the master tapes from the original sessions and that many albums were remastered and produced from the original tapes. There is also confirmation that albums were pressed and distributed to retest the market before the boxed set came out circa 1979. I know for sure that this album was purchased separately at a store in a cut out bin previous to that date, because I'm the one who bought it. So, I will thank the naysayers who questioned the validity of this original label press. However I will say that although it may be a second edition pressing, it was recorded from the original 60's taped sessions and does have the original label (teal color with silver print). Leland oversaw the the entire project. It was never part of the boxed set.
The Cover is M- with no flaws. The record plays M-, but does have some visible markings on side two. So rated EX, but there is absolutely no audible noise. As nice a copy as you will find.
