Click to view supersized image In my 8 years of selling 78s on ebay, I have used the word "rare" only once. Well, here it is again!
Offered is an announced red label 1903 Columbia Grand Opera disc sung by bass Edouard DeReszke entitled "Emani: Infelice, e tuo credevi" (Verdi). This is Columbia 1221 and to add further to its scarcity, it is take-1. (the less rare take-2 was issued and then used to double on Columbia's A series)
This single-sided disc actually still has much of its original surface shine, but it is not without flaws. There are heavy pressure marks made perhaps by a disc shift during the pressing process, or maybe more likely due to having records stacked on top of it, I really don't know. But in any case, there is an intermittent tweeting and surface noise nearly throughout as the stylus passes certain pressure points during playback.
If the flaws stated above were not present, the record would grade excellent (E), but I certainly don't want to understate these heavy pressure marks.
What appears to be center hole damage is only a small label tear, and the center hole is fine. There is a number showing in the playing surface that might further indicate that the pressure marks are due to being at the bottom of a large stack of records.
On the plus side, it plays through fine with no stylus skips.
