1904 NYC Subway comedy record. Many great historic references.. Reuben Haskins trip through the NYC Subway..
This rather rare Columbia record made in 1904 gives the public an idea of what the brand new NYC Subway was like. The recording artists were the prolific brothers Len and Harry Spencer. In the beginning of the record there is incident joking, but after that we hear the sound of the Subway roaring along as it does sound. The first person mentioned was Russell Sage (1816-1906) Who was one of the wealthiest of the robber barons and frequent business partner of Jay Gould. The quote questioning "Who is that queer looking fellow over there?" "Why Uncle, that's Russell Sage."...The comments go on about how he is probably traveling on a free pass. Going pass Tammany Hall, red light district, and finally ending up in the shortest lived parts dealing with the NYC Subway.... Deacon Potter's Subway Temperance Tavern. This "Gin Mill" as stated by Len Spencer was created by Deacon Potter's church. The idea behind the religiously controlled bar was to limit the amount anyone could drink. As you can imagine it was not a success in limiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The patrons soon discovered that little bribes with the bartenders led to plenty of drinks.
This is a most unique record. I never found another copy of it, although I know some must exist. Only produced on 7 inch, so by 1904, that may have limited sales. It has the catalog and a possible matrix number. Catalog number is 3020-1, Matrix M 33-1.
As always the record will be carefully packed in a new box.
