Description
CLICO RECORD
Rare label type
Now here's an odd little label that I've not seen before – it's Clico Records. At the dawn of the century, there were several record companies who were associated with various retail chains, and this seems to be one too. The label is touting the Clinton-Close Company.
Although there is no date on this record, from the style of it's manufacture (one sided, roughly finished back plate) it appears to be from around 1905. It's also an acoustic recording that sounds like the sort of material you would hear on early cylinders.
The selection is by Arthur Collins and he’s singing the pop tune of the day – “Everybody Works But Father.” If you recall the Grouch Marx album from Carnegie Hall, where he spins tales of his early days in showbiz, he sings this very song as an example of one of the first tunes Grouch ever performed in public. It was quite the rage in 1905, just not this obscure pressing- although Arthur Collins was one of the nation’s biggest stars.
