Condition:

VERY GOOD PLUS PLUS very clean, matrix hiss typical of 1906 recordings, best played with a 4 mil stylus otherwise a SUPERB COPY, with 3 mil stylus: short noisy start before music very quiet

Emma Eames (August 13, 1865 - June 13, 1952) was an opera soprano.

The daughter of an international courts lawyer, she was born in Shanghai, China. Attending school in Boston, she studied with the famous teacher Mathilde Marchesi, although she would later downplay Marchesi's influence on her voice. She was eventually called upon to play the heroine in Rom?o et Juliette at the Paris Op?ra. Debuting in 1889, she would play the role many other times in the next two years, finally leaving in 1891 for personal reasons.

The same year, she debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York playing the same role. New York was where she would have the most acclaim, performing in operas until retiring in 1909. She also made appearances at the Royal Opera House in London. She spent her free time touring in concerts around the United States after her retirement from the Met, until finally removing herself from the business entirely in 1916.

In 1929 Eames wrote an autobiography, Some Memories and Reflections.

Eames was reportedly unhappy with the way she sounded on her records, although in 1939 she went on a radio show and picked out some her most famous records, and she spoke immodestly about them. Eames can also be heard in the Mapleson Cylinders.

Eames had a wide repertoire, including Aida, Lohengrin, Tosca, Cavalleria Rusticana, Le Nozze di Figaro, Faust, and Don Giovanni.

She was married twice, first to the painter Julian Story, and then to the famous baritone Emilio di Gigorza, with whom she made some records. She was raised in Portland and Bath, Maine. Both marriages ended in divorce and much bitterness. She had no children, but in her autobiography admitted that she was pressured into a "medical procedure".

She relocated to New York in 1936, where she became a renowned vocal instructor. In New York she was fond of attending Broadway shows. Eames died in 1952 at the age of 86. Emma Eames is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath, Maine.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

As always, I guarantee your satisfaction. If you don't like the item, just return it, and I will refund the full purchase price.

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

1 record: 4.50 – 5.00$

2 records: 5.75$

5 records: 7.50$

10 records: 9.50$

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
