Description

This double faced Columbia recording, of 2 performances by the legendary JOSEPH F. (JOE)FALCON and his wife CLEMO BREAUX is numbered among the very earliest extant documents of Cajun music  This record, Columbia 15325-D features  "LA MARCHE DE LA NOCE" (Wedding March) (matrix No. 146909) and VIEUX AIRS (Old Tunes) (matrix No. 146906).  These masters were recorded on a Columbia field recording expedition to New Orleans in the spring of 1928 and are among the only extant examples of Cajun music before changes wrought by the pervasive influence of radio (and the introduction fo themes and styles borrowed from commercial dance music and Western Swing).

Though these recordings are early they are anything but primitive.  Joe Falcon exhibits excellent musicianship on both sides , and the strongly rythemic guitar accompaniment by his wife, the rather neglected Clemo Breaux provides just the right counterpoint to the exuberant accordeon playing of Joe Falcon.

The melodies on both sides of this recording were considered to be ancient in 1928, but the performances are fresh, lively, and strongly suggestive of modern Zydeco.  The more well known amplified fiddle based recordings of the 1950's seem to me to be rather lacking in drive when compared to these early recordings of  Joe Falcon.

The recording quality is more than acceptable even to modern ears.  The Columbia Viva-Tonal records of the late 1920's, recorded by the Western Electric process, and pressed in a smooth surfaced, laminated synthetic shellac, are the best sounding, longest wearing discs of ther day.  This particular record has a quiet surface and almost audible wear.  No lam cracks or needle digs.  There is light surface scuffing on both sides, which is not audible, a tiny edge chip (about 1.8") on one side, (see photo) which does not come closer than 1/4" to the grooves, and a tangental scratch across about 1/3 of the Wedding March side which just barely sounds on playback.  These minor flaws do not seriously detract from the musical experience.  Please note that a Columbia record in this condition sounds better (with a quieter surface) than a NEW Paramount or Genett.
