HOT DOGS (4578-2) by Blind Lemon Jefferson and his Feet, acc. by his own guitar   and   WEARY DOGS BLUES (4514-4) by Blind Lemon Jefferson, acc. by own guitar (see below)         [Chicago, Illinois]: Paramount 12493 with regular issue Black & Gold Paramount labels, ca. June 1927 - see Dixon & Godrich 1963 edition page 325 which shows no take # on WEARY DOG [sic] BLUES. It appears that D&G claim WEARY DOG [sic] is accompanied by George Perkins piano but the accompaniment here is very plainly guitar only - presumably by Jefferson himself. The label shows "piano and guitar accompaniment" but I listened VERY closely and it is JUST GUITAR. Interestingly enough, George Perkins is given composer credit on both sides. D&G refer to the title as WEARY DOG BLUES while the label on my copy says WEARY DOGS BLUES [see photo].   HOT DOGS is bascially a skiffle number with guitar solo accompanied by talking and rhythmic tapping from Jefferson's feet. (D&G call it "tap dancing" but I think not). Jefferson does sing a little on this side but it's mostly talking, guitar and rhythmic feet noises. NOTE THAT THE RECORD I'M SELLING SHOWS THIS TITLE TO BE TAKE 2 (see photo) while D&G say that the released disc was TAKE 3. I'm wondering if this is a TEST PRESSING even though it has the regular black and gold Paramount labels. See my "hybrid" test pressing by William and Versey Smith and then decide for yourself.   Recent find in a Birmingham antique shop - see my "Paramount Test Pressing" auctions for more details.   Both sides rubbed some but there is 50% gloss on HOT DOGS; about 60% on WEARY DOGS. Tiny pinpoint needle drop (barely affecting the surface of the shellac) on WEARY, about 1/3 of the way into the record, which causes a minor "click" for just one groove. There are some minor scratches on HOT DOGS. The record would grade very nicely visually but there seems to be a bit higher level of New York Recording Laboratories "hiss" (the company apparently used B-grade shellac to hold costs down) and the recording is not quite as strong as some of the Paramounts I am currently offering. I'm hoping the basic lack of clicks and scratches will somewhat offset the slightly higher surface noise. Graded aurally both sides would be V to V+. Those with better record playing systems than my merely serviceable one should get better sound.   Both labels are very bright, shiny and clean and show little use or wear. These sides have been played, of course, but whoever originally owned this disc was very careful in putting it on the Victrola!    ++   I grade 78s visually and then aurally, playing them on a decent portable 3 speed mono record player with fairly light weight tone arm, single speaker and with a .3 millimeter 78rpm sapphire stylus. I generally keep the continuous tone control (controls bass to treble with a single knob) tuned about 3/4 of the way away from maximum treble.   I have been packing and shipping valuable 78s since 1962. More expensive 78s will always be double boxed and I try to ship via priority (upgrading to priority at my own expense if the bidding goes way above my minimum) even though ebay makes it impossible to break even on shipping charges when doing so.   That being said, let me go ahead and say that although I realize there is a huge market for blues 78s overseas, I DO NOT SHIP OUT OF THE U.S. under any circumstances (except American military post office boxes) because of severe and expensive (for me) overseas mailing problems from doing so in the past. I just will not do it even though that might mean getting lesser prices for the neat blues & jazz discs I'll be listing during the next week or two (including a decent # of Paramount Test Pressings - mostly in the mid-12000s).   However, if you live outside of the US and can pay via paypal AND have a friend, business associate or re-mail service in the U S to whom these discs could be sent, I will arrange with eBay for you to bid if you will write me ahead of time with the U S recipient's name and address.   ++++++++++++++   (the fine print ...
