Canadian Soprano INA SOUEZ  - the captivating and mysterious soprano is best known as Donna Elvira in the first complete Glyndebourne Don Giovanni recording under Fritz Busch.

Opaque about her beginnings, and after a fitful career, some older opera fans in San Francisco still remember how Kurt Hebert Adler would slip Souez money on occasion, to support her meagre earnings as a saleswoman in a Fabric Store on Market Street

But here still in her glory of her British successes:

Casta Diva is one of the loveliest arias ever conceived by an Italian composer and one of the most difficult to sing. Those who have heard Rosa Ponselle sing it, or Frieda Hempel in her prime, or those who know Boninsegna's beautiful recording, are likely to feel disappointed with the present version. I doubt if Ina Souez has a voice of sufficient beauty to do the aria full justice ; there is an edge on her high notes. Yet, notwithstanding its faults, her performance is both interesting and creditable. In the main aria it seems that the importance of the occasion had scared her a little, for she improves as she goes along. The air is given complete with cabaletta and the ensuing Druid's march is included ; the initial recitative is omitted. Mr. Barbirolli and the recording engineers should have their share of the credit for the production of a technically excellent record that is well worth hearing.

Ina Souez, an operatic soprano whose career took her from the Glyndebourne Festival in Britain during the 1930's to the slapstick comedy of Spike Jones and his City Slickers in the 1950's, died on Monday at a nursing home in Santa Monica, Calif. She was 89 years old.

She had lived at the home for eight years after a stroke, a spokesman for the Hollywood United Methodist Church said today.

Ms. Souez, whose name was originally Ina Rains, was born to a family of Cherokee descent in Windsor, Colo. She was trained as a child by the Canadian contralto Florence Hinman, who sent her to Europe in 1931, where she starred at the age of 18 in Milan, Italy. She took Europe by storm in the 1930's, with appearances in London, Paris and Rome.

She was the prima donna of the Glyndebourne festival in its formative years and made her home in England for a while. Her recordings of "Don Giovanni" and "Cosi fan Tutte" were the first commercial recordings of those two Mozart operas and are treasured by collectors. She also won praise for her performances of Verdi's "Requiem" with the tenor Jussi Bjoerling.

Souez, Ina, Sopran, * 3.6.1903 Windsor (Colorado), † 9.12.1992 Santa Monica (Kalifornien); eigentlich Ina Rains; Souez nannte sie sich nach dem Familiennamen ihrer Großmutter; unter ihren entfernteren Vorfahren befanden sich Angehörige der Cherokee-Indianer. Ausgebildet durch Florence Hinrichs in Denver, dann durch die kanadische Altistin Florence Lamont Hinman, die sie veranlaßte, in Italien ihre Ausbildung abzuschließen, wo sie u.a. Schülerin von Sofia del Campo in Mailand war. Sie debütierte 1928 am Stadttheater von Ivrea (Piemont) als Mimi in »La Bohème«. 1929 hatte sie ihre ersten Erfolge am Teatro Massimo von Palermo; im gleichen Jahr 1929 sang sie an der Covent Garden Oper London die Liu in Puccinis »Turandot« als Partnerin von Eva Turner, 1935 die Micaela in »Carmen« mit Conchita Supervia in der Titelrolle. Sie heiratete dann einen Engländer und wohnte in dem Jahrzehnt 1929-39 in London. In England feierte man sie an der Londoner Covent Garden Oper, vor allem aber bei den Festspielen von Glyndebourne. Hier trat sie 1934-39 als Donna Anna im »Don Giovanni« und als Fiordiligi in »Così fan tutte« auf, wie sie denn überhaupt als große Mozart- Interpretin galt. Sie gastierte an der Königlichen Oper Stockholm, an den Staatsopern von Wien (1937) und München (1937) und am Théâtre de la Monnaie Brüssel (1938); sie sang 1939 im Haag das Sopran- Solo im Requiem von Verdi. Während sie sich in Italien aufhielt, wurde 1939 ihre Londoner Wohnung bei einem deutschen Luftangriff zerstört. Darauf kehrte sie in die USA zurück und leistete während des Krieges Dienst im Frauenhilfskorps der amerikanischen Armee. 1941 trat sie bei der New Opera Company in New York als Fiordiligi in »Così fan tutte« auf. 1945 sang sie an der New York City Centre Opera wiederum die Fiordiligi in »Così fan tutte«, gab dann aber ihre Opernkarriere auf und wurde Jazz-Sängerin. Mit der Band »Spike Jones and his City Slickers« unternahm sie eine Amerika-Tournee; sie lebte später in San Francisco, Los Angeles und San Diego (Kalifornien). Dort ging sie einer pädagogischen Tätigkeit nach, die sie aber 1981 wegen einer schweren Krankheit beenden mußte.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.
