Description
"Sugar Report" was a wartime radio show with a female host ("Your Sugar") featuring news from the states interspersed with music. According to the AFRTS Archive website: "Most of the time WWII shows in AFRS are fairly common. A few hundred were pressed, several were saved. The Sugar Report was different. The show was apparently recorded to acetate for broadcast from the government's shortwave station in California. So each disk that is found is unique."
On this apparently undocumented edition of Sugar Report from 1944, host Brenda Marshall reports that the "new Adrian Rollini trio is about to move into New York City's Copacabana." There follows a jaunty version of "Honeysuckle Rose" on which Rollini solos on tubular bells as well as vibraphone. There's a guitar solo too. The other musical selections (without Rollini) are "California, Here I Come" (swing band with good piano solo); and "Ain't She Sweet" (large orchestra with fine, Mannie Klein-ish trumpet; fades out at end of program).
Not listed in Ate van Delden's Rollini biography or Lord's discography. Popsike reports no ebay sales of this item.
This single-sided record is in E- condition. It's very well recorded. It is pressed on a material I believe to be glass. It plays at 33-1/3 rpm. It is 16 inches in diameter and therefore requires special playback equipment.
Please note that the beginning of the show is missing; the record begins a bit before Rollini's performance and continues until the end of the program, including AFRS announcements. The total playing time is about 11 minutes.
