Music is not the least of these, for the Band and Glee Club and other musical organizations on the campus have brought much credit to the glorious tradition called Clemson. The 78 piece band distinguished itself nationally by winning high honors in competition with other bands at the Lions-Interna- tional Convention in New York City in 1 949. The Glee Club, with its 38 voices, is considered as one of the country’s finest college male choruses. In addition to appearances on the campus and in the southeast, it has distinguished itself by appear- ing jointly in concert with the Southern Symphony Orchestra. Conducting the Clemson College Glee Club and Band is Hugh H. McGarity, one of the South’s youngest and most capable college music directors. A native of Athens, Georgia, Mr. McGarity joined the Clemson staff in 1946, having received the Bachelor and Master degree in music from the University of Georgia. He has done further graduate study at the University of Southern California and at the Fred Waring Music Workshop at Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pennsylvania. A versatile musician, Mr. McGarity not only is a capable choral and instrumental conductor, but is an able pianist and composer as well. The proposed new music for Clemson’s Alma Mater and the fight song, “Clemson, ,Al!rHair’, both included in this album, are original composi- tions of his. lj. .
