Description
From album notes (also in French): Eddie Lund, in this album, has given the world its first discs of authentic Tahitian music as recorded in the islands themselves. He has studied this music ever since his arrival in Papeete from Washington State 14 years ago and is one of the leading authorities in this field. To insure absolute authenticity in these recordings, Lund traveled to some of the most remote of the Society Islands to assemble talent. Many performers never before had seen a microphone. The nucleus of these recordings is Lund’s own orchestra, heard regularly over Radio Tahiti. The members include: John Gobrait, Fati Deane, Dede Nouveau, Roger Drollet, Boozoo Frogier and Teamo. Aside from the music, Lund is known to thousands as Tahiti’s unofficial host – this as co-owner of the World-Famous “Quinn’s Tahitian Hut!â€
- TAHITI DANCES, Recorded in Tahiti for Tahiti Records in 1949.
- Very rare recordings of authentic Tahitian dances, chants, drum rythms and songs.
- Three records (sides 1/5, 2/6, 3/7) are in very good condition, some light scuff marks, but no major scratches; tested great on an Audiotronics record player.
- Fourth record (sides 4/8) is missing.
- Side 1: PATA’UTA’U – The fast, hip-throwing Tahitian hula.
- Side 2: VAHINE PAUMOTU – “Paumotu Woman†A song of the distant Atolls, accompanied by the highly individual Tairi Paumoto style of guitar.
- Side 3: TAIRI PAHU – Intricate drum rhythms which accompany the Otea, the ceremonial group dances of olden times.
- Side 5: TAGNI TIKA – “The Weeping Lover†The universal plaint of the forsaken lover. In this instance, a Tuamotu boy’s sweetheart has gone to distant Rarotonga because he’s been untrue.
- Side 6: PO AVAE – “Tahitian Cowboy†Even in distant Papeete, Roy Rogers and Trigger are cinematic favorites. As witness the horse operatic flavor of this island melody.
- Side 7: UA HAAVAREVARE “You Can Blame It on the Moon†Current hit of the islands, showing how Tahitians sometimes imitate their Hawaiian cousins.
- Album cover is illustrated on front with abstract coral pattern and native couple dancing. Very Good condition. Gold letters on spine very vibrant. Just some light fading and spotting on upper left corner of front cover and some decay along interior back spine. Interior paper sleeves in perfect condition.
