Description
This is a very uncommon 24 inch tall novelty record player with a kind of typical to record players naugahyde surface , designed like a rope drum but curiously called BONGO, a product of the Molded Insulation Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.The top measures 12 inches across. The 3 speed changer & the mechanics move but need oiling, the volume button / off switch turns freely, and the platter is missing. The AC cord is intact, and the unit plugged in gives no response at all. All of the ropes are secured top and bottom by large brass tacks, and one is missing along the top so the rope is loose.
My research reveals this was manufactured as early as 1958, and that the missing platter was red. A colleague of mine suggests this may be of an dAllie make and that replacing the platter would be a simple task. All the mechanics including the speaker are intact, but I don't know what it would take to get this running. Therefore I am selling this as a great display piece only and as is.
I have posted one extra photo I found on "photobucket" of a Bongo with the platter intact.
