The album cover is by the eminent contemporary artist Salvador Dali. He describes his conception in these words: The first effect is that of anguish, of space, and of solitude. Secondly, the fragility of the wings of a butterfly, pro- jecting long shadows of late afternoon, reverberates in the landscape like an echo. The feminine element, distant and isolated, forms a perfect triangle with the musical instrument and its other echo, the shell. 7 The nostalgic, lonely quality of this album’s music is derived from a novel instrumental concept. For here Jackie Gleason has assem- bled an exotic string combination: mandolins, ’cellos, and domras (richer, deeper mandolins), augmented by guitars and marimba. The featured solo instrument throughout is the rare oboe cTamtnir, whose melancholy tone is hauntingly displayed in each of these favorite selections. Music and memories, "'edded in a nleasant poignancy, is a design for which Jackie Gleason has already demonstrated an ample talent.
