The Beatles – "Ticket to Ride" / "This Boy" (1965, 45 RPM Single) Released in April 1965 on Capitol Records (U.S.) and Parlophone (UK), “Ticket to Ride” was the lead single from Help! and showcased The Beatles' evolving sound. Written primarily by John Lennon, with contributions from Paul McCartney, the song was described by Lennon as one of the first heavy Beatles songs due to its driving rhythm, layered guitar textures, and innovative drum pattern by Ringo Starr. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart, solidifying The Beatles’ dominance in the mid-‘60s.
The B-side, “This Boy”, was originally released in 1963 as the flip side to “I Want to Hold Your Hand” but was reissued on this 1965 single in some markets. A three-part vocal harmony ballad, “This Boy” showcased the group’s deep appreciation for doo-wop and soul influences, with lush harmonies reminiscent of early Motown and R&B records.
This single highlights the contrast between The Beatles’ early and mid-period styles—“Ticket to Ride” representing their move into deeper, more introspective songwriting, while “This Boy” maintained their love for classic pop ballads.
