In the same year, 1967, as Beatles "Sgt Pepper" and Pink Floyd "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", but, clearly there was another masterpiece cut of the same cloth in NIRVANA'S "Story Of Simon Simopath" .... It is a shame that this album is so obscure and buried like the lost nugget gem it truly is. Light years ahead of the well known grunge/Cobain's little band of the same name ...British Nirvana were actually a fine sixties psych-pop group and their debut is incredible for its time. It is arguably the first "concept" album and the arrangements are lush and the production is quite "trippy" at times.
One of, if not the first concept albums, "The Story Of Simon Simopath" is almost as baroque and airy-light rock one could find, certainly an immense "grower" with repeat plays. Part Beatles, part Left Banke, the band uses a plentiful amount of atmospheric arrangement in the sounds. The vocal harmonies are light and well done. "Wings of Love" is a pop opening number similar to something say of the Left Banke. "Lonely Boy" has some swelling organ sounds, within the poprock feel. "Pentecostal Hotel" is a wonderful top level track that has been selected on some great psych compilations. "I've Never Had a Love Like This Before" is very much a atospheric airy ballad with infectious melody; arrangements and piano. "1999" with energetic keys and deep background spicey sounds. "Requiem for John Coltrane" is in textured/complex pained screams... The UK version of Nirvana were an entirely different beast. The songwriting team of Patrick Campbell-Lyons and Alex Spyropoulos were more concerned in the catchy hooks / flowing melodies side of 60's psychedelia. Released in 1967, 'The Story Of Simon Simpoath' lays claim to being the world's first concept album, pre-dating The Pretty Things' 'S.F. Sorrow' and The Who's 'Tommy'. It traces the story from life to death of the titular hero via a series of short songs which are similar in tone and innocence to the work of Mark Wirtz. Although never reaching any degree of classic status, most of the songs are strong enough to cater for Lyons' somewhat plummy vocals and the saccharine sentiments. Indeed, 'I Never Had A Love Like This Before' and 'The Courtyard Of The Stars' in particular, hold a defiant and tuneful flower up to the aggression of the concept albums which would subsequently follow.

CONDITION: The cover, VG+ has light ring wear starting, a small delete hole at bottom left (doesn't notice much) otherwise no seam splits and relatively solid
The vinyl is VG+ a few superficial scuffs, at worse has some light surface in some quiet zones, on the whole plays VG++ & ex-cellent ...still maintains a glossy shine all over the grooves...
