1969: VELVET UNDERGROUND live with LOU REED
is what happens before the music starts...
It’s the usually grouchy Lou Reed in a jaunty mood, engaged in a light banter with his Dallas audience. First, acting in loco parentis, Lou expresses his concerns about the apparently heavily student-laden crowd’s bedtime. It was a Sunday evening, a school night. He’s apparently concerned that they get enough sleep, so he asks them if they prefer one long set, or two short ones. Not what you would expect from a Rock ’n’ Roll rebel and the author of a song about heroin addiction.
Unexpected also is what follows, so seemingly out of context: Reed gives us a brief commentary on an NFL football game, a Dallas Cowboys’ drubbing of the Philadelphia Eagles. “You should give other people just a little chance….”, Lou exhorts the Dallas crowd, “in football anyway.”
He then launches right into “Waiting For My Man,” and in the blink of an eye, the football game is forgotten. We’re transported to a grimy and drug-addled street corner in Harlem, looking to score a fix. It’s late 1969 and just as the muddy free-love vibe of Woodstock is giving way to something more serious and sinister, we have the frenetic and dissonant Velvet Underground, the antithesis of hippiedom, leading us on a journey to rock music’s punk future and way, way beyond. - DS Racer -
