One of the most unusual signings by the legendary Deram label, not least of all because he was American, poet/singer/songwriter William R. Strickland was paired with a progressive backing band (this was 1969 in London, mind you!) ...

William R. Strickland is the name of the singer-songwriter-performer who put out this odd record on London/Deram records back in 1969. He plays guitar and sings about World War 3 (1/2) and computer love (long before internet dating). You would call him a folk singer with prog and psych flourishes--he certainly has the Dylan-style sneer down--but the general weirdness of the songs (which he says were largely improvised) lends a certain psychedelic quality to the whole affair. If one were to  suggest a point of comparison (and an obscure one at that) we'd say he reminds of Peter Grudzien without the 'fairy' lyrics and with a wider range of instruments (there's  a sythesizer  and Hammond organ backing).

Jim Morrison of The Doors was rumoured to be a fan: presumably he saw something of himself in Strickland’s rudderless spontaneity. Forty years down the line, the rest of us should marvel that Is Only The Name was ever released at all. Strickland gibbers, raves and free-associates throughout, hammering away with monomaniacal fervour on his acoustic guitar, accompanied, while mile-high choruses and ass-shaking rhythms are notable absentees, and one would hesitate to recommend the album for seductive ambience on a first date. Nevertheless, there’s something truly compelling about Strickland’s heroically unfettered performances. Deram Records  should be applauded for taking a punt on something so obscure. He was said to be like "a kinky cross between Mark Twain and Lenny Bruce" though Strickland is a more noted mix of Charles Manson, Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd.

Hammond organ sweeps across "Romeo De La Route," a moving & grooving "You Know My Body," while pastoral flute ripples through "Touch." All the while, Strickland strums his guitar and riffs on the themes of life and love. "World War 3 1/2," however, at over 11 minutes, is his piece de resistance. Imagine a hipster 'head' eagerly joining the army instead of successfully dodging the draft, and going off to boot camp and then a futuristic war. It's a witheringly sardonic look at the military mentality that highlights the adventurous and bold album, remaining a 'lost' Deram release collector's item for the 40+ years since it was first issued. And certainly worthy of resurrection or first time investigation...you might have to say. Strickland’s “nutter on the bus” persona – is somewhere between Syd Barrett and the Manson Family and with 1969 era progressive rock backing,  whew!

CONDITION: The cover is solid on all areas, having no more than passive faint shelf wear, otherwise very stiff, colorful & crisp VG++ no split seams, no bends, no writing.

The vinyl is all glossy both sides, M- looks extremely clean and has clean Deram labels too.
