1969 Winstons Soul Funk LP (Color Him Father)
Winstons – “Color Him Father” (Metromedia 1010). The Winstons were a self-contained band based out of Washington, D.C. most associated with the hit song "Color Him Father" in the summer of 1969. This song went #2 Billboard R&B chart and #7 on the Pop 100. The writer, Richard Spencer (lead vocal, formerly of Leroy Taylor & The Four Kays), received a Grammy Award for the best new song of the year. The LP includes 11 cuts. The Winstons were the backup band for Curtis Mayfield & the Impressions and recorded one single for Curtom in 1968 ("Need A Replacement") before signing with Metromedia Records a year later. The group cut a few more singles including "Love Of The Common People" before disbanding in the early 1970s. Amen, Brother" - the b-side of Color Him Father - has went on to become one of the most sampled records in music. Cuts include: “Color Him Father”, “I’ve Gotta Be Me”, “The Chokin Kind”, “A Handful of Friends”, “Everyday People”, “Days of Sand and Shovels”, “Birds of a Feather”, “Only the Strong Survive”, “Traces”, and “Amen, Brother”. Record is in strong VG+ condition. Cover is still in shrinkwrap. Postage to be paid by purchaser.
