Description

Welcome to my auction for the untitled fourth release by Led Zeppelin! I have done extensive research to be sure I am representing this album for what it truly is. If you have any questions or want other photos, please message me.

The word "PORKY" is etched in the dead wax of Side B, which indicates this album was mastered by George "Porky" Peckham. His incredible career also includes work on albums for The Beatles and Genesis. Albums mastered by George are known as a "Porky Prime Cut" and are very well regarded for their outstanding sound.

Following are the specifics and identifiers that differentiate the versions of this album. From my best estimation, this is a Version 8 album.

Led Zeppelin IV information:

  • 1971 Great Britain, UK - marked on record label
  • Red / Plum Atlantic Recording Corp. label
  • Marketed by: Polydor Records Limited
  • B-side track correctly shown as “Misty Mountain Hop”
  • B-side feather logo is right side up
  • Peter Grant text credit on gray liner
  • No Grant credit on label.
  • Original store label in corner of cover indicating price of £ 2.35 pounds
  • A3 / B4
These are indicators used on Discogs.com, which was very helpful! There are also markings in the dead space, of which I have posted pictures.  Side A is stamped 2401012 X X  A // 3  11   25. Side A also has the words "PECKO DUCK" etched in the dead wax. Side B is stamped 2401012   B // 4  11   2.        Side B also has the word "PORKY" etched in the dead wax.
This record is in much nicer shape than the cover would indicate. I have rated the record as VG. It plays through without skipping, and I have a very light needle! There is constant background static, as could be expected with a 52 year old album, but it does not overpower the music. Most of the surface scratches do not affect the playing of the album. There are a few scratches that give a noticeable, but not overwhelming "pop" on each rotation. Specifically, there is a pop you can hear through about the last half of "The Battle of Evermore", but it is not overly distracting. The album cover shows a lot of wear, especially on the opening side, and I rate the cover as G. I have included close ups of the edges. The inner sleeve is good overall, but does have separations in the middle of each side from the record cutting through. There are three tiny 1/4" tears at the opening edge. Please take a good look at the pictures, and request more if needed. Thank you!
With that, I leave it to you to bid what you think is appropriate for this excellent piece of music history. Thank you for your time reading my listing, and good luck with your bids!
