Description
This 12” diameter, 33 1/3 rpm, long-playing vinyl record is Probe “Direction”, Eborp #SS-21396 ©1971. Probe hails from Rockford, Illinois, having started in 1969 and produced just 500 copies of this, their one-and-only full-length album. My offering is for one those first 500, not a reissue copy. I found this in a second hand store not far from where the band started. Its original owner put a clipping from the June 19, 1971 Rockford Register-Star inside the jacket. It does a pretty thorough job of laying out the band’s credentials and includes decent photos (the same ones cropped for use on the back of the album).
The jacket is VG (short seam splits at top & bottom, letter “C” on front, ring wear and discoloration). Newspaper clipping is complete, unwritten on but with expected yellowing. Labels are also unmarked although side one’s has a scratch across it.
I was really excited to play this record but, when I put it on my turntable and gave it a spin, my heart fell. It’s got an edge warp, enough to make the first half of both sides unlistenable. Too bad, too, ‘cause what I am hearing is some very adventurous rock. The playing surfaces have a good shine but are adorned with scuffs and light scratches. The portions which play, play with good sonic authority. Light ticking is heard, mostly in between the latter tracks. So, one half of a good, rare LP - pretty much filler until one of its 499 brothers turns up.
