Rock On is a 1972 one-off album of oldies covers by the Bunch, a group of English folk- rock singers and musicians. The Bunch got together in late 1971 to record their one and only album, Rock On. This album consists of covers of the band’s favorite songs by the likes of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and The Everly Brothers.
Members of the Bunch include members of Fairport Convention and others: Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Linda Thompson, Pat Donaldson, Ashley Hutchings, Gerry Conway, Dave Mattacks.
For years, this record was the holy grail for British folk-rock completists, featuring, as it does, a sort of Fairport Convention-Fotheringay super-group, covering a bunch of rock n' roll oldies. These are professionals, playing the music they started out playing. Richard Thompson fans will love this, as he is all over it -playing on every cut, singing on a few... The version of "Jambalaya", he does, is particularly inspired. It's also fun to hear the notoriously brainy and angst-ridden, Mr. Thompson, cut loose on something light-hearted like, "Sweet Little Sixteen".
Sandy Denny sings lead on "That'll Be the Day", "Love Made a Fool Out of You", "Willie and the Hand-Jive", and "Learning the Game" (a rather heart-rending rendition). Linda Peters/Thompson sings lead on "The Locomotion" and "La Bamba". Ashley Hutchings' only contribution is a kind of talking blues vocal on "Nadine". Denny's boyfriend Trevor Lucas does vocals on "Don't Be Cruel" and "Twenty Flight Rock", and Richard Thompson handles the rest. The LP's unquestioned high point is, "When Will I Be Loved", a lovely duet tween Denny and Linda Peters, with Lucas and Thompson on guitars.
