RARE ~ Original early 70's private ((M-)) pressing in a way-out designed fold-out with flaps cover that has to be seen to be appreciated...this is the rare & highly sought real deal first pressing with ALL the inserts (hard to find complete like this!)
HATED. DESPISED. SCORNED. That's Mogan David & His Winos. Columbia Records won't touch them, and The Duke (of American Rock Critics) won't let them near his turntable.
THE SAVAGE WINOS were led by Harold (Mogan David) Bronson, who would go on to run Rhino Records. The album was released as a mail order local vinyl pressing in 1973, and is a handful & headful of crude rockin' garagerock with all the charm in the world that these sort of bands can muster. The packaging is really cool and funny and worth the price of the LP. It's chock full of notes and inserts, all of which are a kick. The music on the LP is a blast, and they dug to the depths for enough material to fill 40 minutes. The first four songs are from their last singles, and are by far the best songs on the album, terrific garage pop with funny lyrics and a cool punk feel. Side one is filled out by four earlier recordings (two are dating back to 1968 & 1969) that are extremely low-fidelity and crude. One is called "Nose Job," and two others are obviously inspired by the Bonzo Dog Band. Fun for sure, even if they are not as exciting as the songs that came before. Side two is mostly a live performances -- energetic versions of well-known songs. The final song is a home recording (lo-fi garage gem ala the live recording) of a comic blues song. Obviously, these tracks are worth hearing, and the liner notes make it a cool artifact. By the way, there's a little bonus at the end of side two, so don't lift the needle before it's over. Harold Bronson leading a gang of school-pals (all with great names like 'Cute Dan' and 'Speed Freak Paul') through a side and one more of excellente giz-rock of the oily early 1970's GARAGE ROCK vintage. Beauty Queen (circa '73) is probably - no, definitely - the best track on this slab o' wax. Lethal levels of ineptitude are reached and somehow hitched to unbelievable lines of melodicism!!! Street Baby is The Real Kids seven years early, Party Games is more psychedelic than the Leopards picking a fight with Poobah and Nose Job has lyrics stolen from MAD Magazine - recorded on George Carlin's portable tape machine no less! Side two is live & raw and there is a surprise blooz track at the end !).
The packaging is (ala the Who's Live-At-Leeds) lavish style beyond all reason - especially given its limited nature - with the sordid history of the band all typed out on the back-side of the gatefold (three members quit to devote more time to working on their hot rods only to miss out on Nose Job becoming the semester hit of the UCLA campus bookstore). Funny inserts, comics, contests, failed music theory papers and clippings are all an extra-tall glass of glee and refreshingly round out this bubbly belly-washer of an LP. It was sold mainly through the pages of Phonograph Record and other period tabloid music mags. To sum up:The name of the band is Mogan David & His Winos, The name of the record is Savage Young Winos, available on the private label, Kosher Records ... it's a sought after lo-fi production -- gruesome garage mangler rock-out of the best kind ...copies have sky rocketed in value, one taste and you'll know why! Beauty Queen (1973) Love Potion Number 9 (1973) Part Games (1973) Street Baby (1971) Nose Job (1971) The BIG War (1970) Music Music (1969) Sugar Lips (1968) B: Down The Road Apiece (1971) The Last Time (1971) Glad All Over (1971) Communication Breakdown (1971) Berkowitz Blues (1973)
CONDITION: The Cover: The strangely designed gatefold cover with all sorts of photos & info everywhere, even on the fold-out flaps ~~ is still in great shape, M- and all the inserts are enclosed and minty clean!)
