The King's Heralds have come up with a program that will keep you alert and inspire you from the first introduction to the final fade-out. NEAR THE CROSS, AMAZING GRACE, and NEARER, MY GOD TO THEE, are three favorite hymns that receive a fresh treatment with keyboard, strings, flute, and even some 12-part voicings. The haunting melody of the folk-hymn, OPEN MY EYES, is hard to forget, especially that harmonica solo played by Dr. Keith Callender. GOD'S LOVE is one of those perfect combinations of words and music which shows the genius of composer Sybil York. From the young generation comes a new song called NOAH, about God's final judgment, written by Verlin Chalmers. He wrote it for solo voice and guitar, but we elected to arrange and sing it in a concert version. At the piano on this number (and several others on the album) is Calvin Taylor, gifted keyboard musician from Los Angeles. He was educated at Oberlin College Conservatory in Ohio. We are pleased to share his artistry with you in this, his first appearance on Chapel Records. I WOULD WALK WITH YOU, LORD has contemporary words and music—a young person's prayer to know how to get "in step" with the Lord. Special mention must be made of the traditional children's song, known and loved by young and old alike all over the world, ONLY A BOY NAMED DAVID. This song was first recorded by the quartet in the late 1950's. Such has been its popularity that we are happy to present it anew on this album with a unique background all its own. To round out the list, the quartet sings a cappella, in the time-honored King's Heralds tradition, HOW GREAT THOU ART; the spiritual, YOU'D BETTER GET YOU READY; and a multiple recording in eight parts of a Russian hymn that reminds us a little of the Cossack Chorus "sound," COME LET US SING. We all received a great blessing while working together as a team on these songs. We just hope a large measure of that blessing can by yours as you listen. — Wayne Hooper.
