Alabama Gals (C,D,F — 1,2) This, the third album by The Whitetop Mountain Band, is the first one featuring all the band members. Albert Hash, well known for both his fiddling and fiddle making, has made and played fiddles for over fifty years. The fiddle he plays on this record is his favorite, made in 1953. Albert has a unique style of fiddling that is seldom heard today. Most folks have heard of “Coming From Alabama With a Banjo on My Knee”. Well, Flurry Dowe did just that. Flurry, originally from Montgomery, Alabama, was traveling through Grayson County sev- eral years back search- ing for traditional old time music. He found it and never has left. He learned a lot from the banjo picking of Jont Blevins. “Rambling Hobo” and “Shortening Bread” were learned from him. “Alabama Gals” is Flurry’s own ar- rangement of this old tune. Thornton Spencer, brother-in-law of Albert, has played the fiddle for many years and much of his fiddling was learned from Albert, although Thornton has a style all his own. He also plays guitar and has a fine ear for tuning instruments. He is the “tuner” for The Whitetop Mountain Band. Becky Haga, from the Galax area, comes from a musical family. Her grandparents on both sides of the family played and sang and she learned many songs from them. Her grandfather showed her the first chords on the guitar years ago. Becky does a fine job singing lead and tenor and playing rhythm guitar. She is also a budding dulcimer maker and a flatfoot dancer. Tom Barr is from the Coal Creek community near Galax. Tom holds the band together with his solid bass playing. He is also a fiddle maker and a very fine one. The fiddle Thornton plays on this record is made by Tom. Emily Spencer, Thornton’s wife, has been playing music and singing since she was a child. She started playing fiddle, then changed over to the ukelele before becoming a guitar player. She has played the guitar for the past fifteen years. Emily and Becky do the singing for the Whitetop Mountain Band and are featured here on “I’ll Fly Away”, “I Saw the Light”, “Ala- bama Gals”, “Gathering Flowers from the Hillside”, and “Kentucky”, creating a very powerful duet.
