Mkwaju Ensemble – “Mkwaju” (Better Days 7019_. Excellent Japanese Digitally mastered LP recorded in February, 1981 by this group featuring– Hideki Matsutake (Computer [Programming]); Joe Hisaishi (Keyboards, Producer); Yoji Sadanari (Marimba [Bass], Gong, Tom Tom); Junko Arase (Marimba [Mitla]); Pecker (Percussion [Latin]); and Midori Takada (Vibraphone, Gong, Marimba, Tom Tom). Cuts include: “Mkwaju”; “Shak Shak”; “Lemore”; “Tira-Rin”; “Pulse in My Mind”; and “Flash-Back”. Mkwaju was Joe Hisaishi's first album of original compositions, performed by and attributed to the Mkwaju percussion ensemble and places his early influences (American minimalists like Riley and Reich) in far clearer view than any of his later works though the melodic devices that would become his signature as a soundtrack composer were already in evidence.
