This outstanding 2LP gatefold set, a still-sealed copy, from Deutsche Grammophon (2741 026, German pressing, DDD stereo) features a wonderful meeting of seven great violin virtuosi at Frederic Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv during the 1982 Huberman Festival, the centerpiece of which is a justly famous account of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat Major K. 364 with Itzakh Perlman taking the violin part, Pinchas Zukerman the viola part, and with Zubin Mehta directing the Israel Philharmonic, who do the orchestral honors throughout.

Also included, however, are Vivaldi's evergreen Four Seasons, Bach's Double Concerto in D minor BWV 1043 and Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins in B minor (No. 10 from "L'Estro armonico" Op. 3 / RV 580).

An ingenous bit of concert-making, each of Vivaldi's Four Seasons was played by a different artist: Isaac Stern the soloist in Spring, Pinchas Zukerman in Summer, Shlomo MIntz in Autumn, and Itzakh Perlman in Winter. The Israel Philharmonic, under the direction of Zubin Mehta, provided sterling accompaniment throughout.

For this listener at least, it is Stern who proves the most characterful soloist, besting his younger colleagues in flair and imagination – when will this great violinist be given his full due and be regarded by collectors with the same enthusiasm they show OIstrakh, Kogan, Heifetz, et al.

In the Concerto for Two Violins in D minor BWV 1043 Isaac Stern and Shlomo Mintz are the highly expressive protagonists, while in the wonderful Vivaldi Concerto the soloists are Isaac Stern, Ivry Gitlis, Ida Haendel, and Shlomo Mintz.

Incidentally, the rear panel of the jacket contains several striking color photos of the artists, and the inner panels contain liner notes in English, French, and German.

The 1982 Huberman Festival must have been a very special occasion – all four performances are truly inspired and the rapt account of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante K. 364 has been a long-standing 'Rosette' winner in The Penguin Guide.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the still-sealed jacket is near-MINT. The only real flaw concerns some minuscule wear to the lower-right corner, but that is all. Otherwise, the album appears as new. There are no owners' markings, bends, seamsplits,or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and glossy.  Overall, this is a truly fine collector's copy.

The condition of the 2 LPs is MINT throughout – these are pristine, still-sealed LPs – the ideal collector's copies.
