LOVE ME DO/P.S. I LOVE YOU (Parlophone 4949 1st UK pressing on red label without "Made In Great Britain" text, 1962): VG w/number "10" on label (see photo).
Seldom seen on this side of The Pond! Guaranteed original 1st pressing of this historic 45; absolutely the FIRST Beatles single released anywhere in the world. A result of their maiden recording session at Abbey Road in September 1962, this was the first UK single released. The performance wasn't as thunderous as the Fabs' legend might indicate; it only made it to #17 on the Brit charts. It wouldn't have done that well if Brian Epstein hadn't bought 10,000 copies. But this was certainly the Start Of Something Big, wasn't it?
This original UK version had Ringo on drums, rather than the take that was used in the U.S. and elsewhere, which had session drummer Andy White on skins. It's the first pressing of the 45, without the "Made In Great Britain" text on the right side of the label in later pressings. An important addition for any serious Beatles collector.
Here's why U.S. collectors should take a good look at adding original Parlophone UK 45RPM pressings to their collections:
1) These singles are as The Beatles intended them. U.S. Capitol messed around with Beatles releases, sometimes changing the flip side (and altering their LPs, too...the real meaning of the "butcher" cover was that Our Heroes were sick and tired of Capitol butchering their albums!)
2) The recordings are clearer. Capitol often used second or third generation tapes for U.S. releases; the UK singles sound better!
3) This is absolutely the first release Beatles 45 anywhere in the world! And like the other Parlophone 45s, it's much scarcer than U.S. singles; Capitol's orange-and-yellow swirls were produced in the millions, but Parlophone catered to a much smaller UK population. This first Beatles 45 was issued in the mere thousands; the first run was only 2000 copies!
Go ahead and pick up the U.S. 45s for their pic sleeves (believe it or not, only two Brit original singles had picture sleeves: Strawberry Fields and Let It Be). But you'd be wise to add the historic Parlophone 1st pressings while prices are still reasonable!
