1st Pressing Jimi Hendrix’ Mono LP ‘Are You Experienced’ Track Records, 612001, 1967
Given its age the album is in remarkably good condition and plays beautifully. Unfortunately there is age related wear and tear on the outer cardboard cover and a hand written message in blue ink: ‘To my mate on his 22nd birthday, Carl’ on the top right hand corner of the cover’s rear.
This is the debut studio album by Hendrix’ first, arguably his best, band the Jimi Hendrix Experience’. Members include Hendrix (guitar), Noel Redding (bass) and Mitch Mitchell (drums). Released in 1967 by the then newly formed ‘Track Records’ label – a subsidiary of Polydor Records.
The record is numbered Track 61 2001 and the Matrices are: Side 1– 612001 A v 1, Side 2 – 612001 B (there is an A here which looks as if it’s been crossed out) v 1.
The LP was an immediate critical and commercial success and is widely regarded as one of the greatest debuts in the history of rock music. The album features Hendrix’s innovative approach to songwriting and electric guitar playing which soon established a new direction in psychedelic/hard rock music and electric guitar technique.
The cardboard sleeve
As the photographs clearly show there is obvious signs of age related wear and tear on the cardboard sleeve. This is especially evident on the spine and the lower rear right hand corner. There is some lifting on the front cover and I have shown evidence of this in the photographs. The front laminated cover is printed by Ernest J. Day and Co. Ltd, London W.1).
However, there is some age related colouring at the edges of the black and white photographs on the back cover and a hand written message in blue ink: ‘To my mate on his 22nd birthday, Carl’ on the top write hand corner.
The paper and polythene cover
The paper and polythene inner cover is compete with no tears or splits. The outer paper has coloured with age at the edges and is slightly indented to the shape of the record.
The record
The record’s labels are unmarked and the black and silver colouring are as new. These first press labels have a small ridge around the centre hole.
The vinyl is remarkably clean with no spindle damage. There is a scuff mark from track 1 through to track 5 on Side I but this does not have any impact on the sound reproduced. Otherwise the vinyl is unmarked.
Before putting the decision to sell the album was played on a Steepletone 3 speed vinyl turntable record player (model ST918) at full volume. Both sides played without any irritating noticeable repetitive clicking or sticking with no audible and unacceptable surface noise to detract from the quality of the music. It really does sound fantastic.
In sum, this LP is in remarkably good condition, plays beautifully and reproduces the music as was originally intended. It will make a worthy and much valued addition to the collection of heavy rock fans and collectors alike. It’s important to note though that if you are looking for a copy of this LP with a pristine cover don’t bother bidding. I’ve had time wasters before and there will be no returns.
