Description
This auction is for two 33 rpm vinyl stereo albums that were originally released in 1970 and 1973.
Grateful Dead, Workingman’s Dead, Warner Brothers #1869, 1970. This is apparently the original release with the back cover upside down and a green label.
Record: Very Good Plus. At the high end of VG+. Perfectly flat. Superficial and completely inaudible micro-scratches are only visible in reflected direct sunlight. Light spindle impressions are only on side 1.
Original sleeve: Very Good. Crisp and clean with no marks, soiling, or yellowing. 3.5-inch bottom split, 1-inch split on one side, and a 4-inch corner crease.
Cover: Very Good Plus. Crisp and clean with the only flaw being light wear on the corners and edges; edge printing unworn.
Overall grade: VG+. The two seam splits in the original Warner Brothers sleeve are the biggest flaws in this item’s overall condition.
Merl Saunders, Fire Up, Fantasy 9421, 1973. This album features Jerry Garcia on guitar and the entire production has a very similar sound to The Jerry Garcia Band; each is mellow rock but JGB is more gospel whereas Merl’s band is more blues. (See my other auctions for a JGB double CD.)
Record: Very Good Plus. At the high end of VG+. Perfectly flat. The only flaw visible under indoor lighting is a light and inaudible 1/4-inch scratch at the beginning of the first song on Side 1. A few superficial and completely inaudible micro-scratches are only visible in reflected direct sunlight.
Plain paper sleeve: Very Good. Age browning and a 3-inch bottom seam split. Lightly worn upper edge. No marks, soiling, or bends.
Cover: Very Good. Ring wear on both, but most noticeably on the front, cover is the main flaw. Light edge and corner wear but all printing on the edge is clearly legible. Moderate surface wear overall. No creases or splits.
Overall grade: VG+. The clean-sounding record is the main factor in any record grade, and in this case it keeps the overall grade at VG+ even though both paper items are not as well preserved as is the vinyl record.
SUMMARY
Both albums’ grades are VG+. Each is perfectly flat with clean sound throughout, and with no audible background noise, groove scratchiness, or pops. The opening bid is $9.
GRADING
Finicky collectors beware! I do my best to attach correct grades but I am an amateur record grader so please read my descriptions completely and don’t rely solely upon the grades which I have assigned. I follow the classic Goldmine record grading system which basically uses three grades for enjoyable listening experiences: Near Mint, Very Good Plus, and Very Good. None of the records, sleeves, or covers I am selling deserve the Good grade, the defining characteristic of which is an urge to find a better copy. I listen to all of the songs completely and look closely at the record for surface imperfections. A step that I have newly added is to examine each record in reflected direct sunlight where superficial micro-scratches that are invisible under bright indoor lighting can be seen. I watch the record from its edge as it is spinning to detect the slightest warpage. Finally, I use a de-static alcohol wipe to remove any bits of lint or other particles immediately before packaging.
SHIPPING
The buyer must pay to ship these albums using the cheapest shipping service, USPS Media Mail. If you buy more than one of my album auctions, I will package them together and quickly rebate any overpayment beyond eBay’s shipping cost. This auction is limited to delivery within the forty-eight contiguous States.
PACKAGING
These albums will be sandwiched between two thick pieces of corrugated cardboard sized with a padded edge margin. I take a ridiculous amount of time making sure that my items are packaged well. Sellers who risk damage to their items by quick and shoddy packaging are probably the type of people who cheated their way through school. I am retired so I have the time to ensure safe travel for every item I sell. I have never had a complaint about packaging inadequacy in my quarter-century of selling my items—mostly fragile comic books—on eBay!
FEEDBACK
I leave feedback as soon as I’ve shipped the items, and my only concern is that the buyer pays within one week of the close of the auction. For single auction purchases, sending an invoice is an extra step that is unnecessary, so please try to pay within four days of the auction’s closing. If payment has not been made within four days of the auction’s close, I will send one invoice reminding the buyer that only three days remain in order to receive positive feedback from me. If payment has not been made within sixteen days, eBay will be automatically informed and your access to all sellers will be jeopardized.
