DESCRIPTION:
Mamie Smith (1891 – 1946) "was an American vaudeville singer, dancer, pianist and actress. As a vaudeville singer she performed in various styles, including jazz and blues. In 1920, she entered blues history as the first African-American artist to make vocal blues recordings. . . Because of its historical significance, "Crazy Blues" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1994 and was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2005."
OVERALL CONDITION:
OKEH 4169
No Chips or Stress-Cracks. The record is quite "WORN" with GREYING in the grooves and numerous SCRATCHES & MARKS (see scan below).
The OKEH 4169 label has some scratches and scrapes especially in the worn area around the center hole (see scan below).
OKEH 4446
No Chips or serious cracks. May be one small Stress-Fracture starting on the edge of A-side, but it might just be a scratch. The record is quite "WORN" with GREYING in the grooves and numerous SCRATCHES & MARKS (see scan below).
The OKEH 4446 label has some scratches and scrapes especially in the worn area around the center hole on the A-side (see scan below).
OKEH 4113
No Chips or serious cracks. The record is quite "WORN" with GREYING in the grooves and numerous SCRATCHES & MARKS (see scan below).

PLAYING ON MY PLAYER:
OKEH 4169
This record is a little warped and there is a small skip just at the beginning of the A-side. A-side has SIGNIFICANT BACKGROUND NOISE through the first half. It is easily as loud as the music. The second half of the song has less background noise. There is a medium amount of Background Noise on the B-side. The words & music are still pretty audible throughout both songs. There are a few scratched areas where the needle "clicks" a bit but doesn't skip or get stuck. Both sides have the usual snaps, crackles & pops.
OKEH 4446
Both sides have the usual snaps, crackles & pops. A-side has SIGNIFICANT BACKGROUND NOISE through the the entire song, but expecially at the beginning. It often overpowers the music. The music comes through better on the B-side, but the background noise is still quite loud. Both sides have a few scratched areas where the needle "clicks" a bit but doesn't skip or get stuck.
OKEH 4113
This record is quite worn & scratched. There is one place on the B-side almost half-through the record where the NEEDLE GETS STUCK & requires a slight "push." Both sides have SIGNIFICANT BACKGROUND NOISE which overpowers the music in some places. The noise is easily as loud as the music. The words & music are still mostly audible throughout both songs. There are a few scratched areas where the needle "clicks" but doesn't skip or get stuck, except in the one case mentioned above.
These THREE (3) old records by MAMIE SMITH are scarce classic Blues on the OKEH label. One also immortalizes the classic song "Crazy Blues."
