141. 3 VINTAGE 78 RPM "HOT DANCE" RECORDS ~ VICTOR 38000 (1928), 38079 (1929), AND 38146 (1930) ~ ALL IN VINTAGE VICTOR PAPER SLEEVES

1.  VICTOR 38000 McKinney's Cotton Pickers   "Crying and Sighing" / "Nobody's Sweetheart"

G+ to V- condition ~ The labels have scuffs, small scratches, wear around spindle holes, and circular scratches on "Sweetheart".  The surfaces have visible scuffs, small scratches, small gray patches, and stressed grooves (wear) on both sides.  This item plays with some surface noise, slightly rough starts on both sides, and areas of blasting ("Sweetheart" plays somewhat better).

2.  VICTOR 38079 Duke Ellington and his Cotton Club Orchestra   "Cotton Club Stomp" / "Arabian Lover"

V- condition ~ The labels have scuffs, small scratches, wear around spindle holes, and some fading.  The surfaces have visible scuffs, small scratches, small gray patches, and a small repaired hairline crack from outside edge (does not sound).  This item plays with excellent fidelity and light surface noise (plays much better than it looks).    

3.  VICTOR 38146 Bubber Miley and his Mileage Makers   "Chinnin' and Chattin' with May" / "Black Maria"

V condition ~ The labels have light scuffs, small scratches, center area wear on "Maria", and 3 very small and faint star cracks from center under "Maria" side label (not visible on other side).  The surfaces have visible scuffs, numerous small scratches, and light groove wear.  This item plays with good fidelity, some surface noise, and a slight rough start on "Maria" (quickly quiets).

The paper sleeves have light creases, small folds, are slightly brittle, and all have browned somewhat due to age.

***No worries about packing…I pack for shipment like the pros - record secured between cardboard squares in large box with plenty of padding.

 GRADING IS CONSERVATIVE USING THE VJM RECORD GRADING SYSTEM:

N (78). As new and unplayed (there are virtually no 78s that can categorically be claimed to be unplayed).

N- (78). Nearly Mint, but has been played. No visible signs of wear or damage.

E+ (78). Plays like new, with very, very few signs of handling, such as tiny scuffs from being slipped in and out of jackets.

E  (78). Still very shiny, near new looking, with no visible signs of wear, but a few inaudible scuffs and scratches.

E- (78). Still shiny but without the luster of a new record, a few light scratches and scuffs.

V+ (78).  An average condition 78 in which scuffs and general use has dulled the finish somewhat. Wear is moderate but playing is generally free from distortion. Surface noise not overly pronounced.

V (78). Moderate, even wear throughout, but still very playable. Surface noise and scratches audible but not intrusive.

V- (78). Quite playable still, but distortion and heavy graying in loud passages. Music remains loud in most passages. Surface noise and scratches well below music level.

G+ (78). Grey throughout but still serviceable. Music begins to sound muffled. Heavy scratches.

G (78). Quite seriously worn and scratched, but music level is still higher than surface noise.
