Embrace of Thorns - Atonement Ritual
Imagine a dark cavern. Imagine, a deep underground, pitch black dark cavern. One where no sunlight can be seen, which has no day or night, but only eternal darkness. And neither the concept of time is relevant. A cavern, where the air is dense, but limited, with an unsettling warmness, which hasn't born foreign particles for a long time, slowly to be consumed by candles faintly lit around. Among those candles are skulls, and various bones which may belong to the previous dwellers, or not. The scent is foul, too. Those dwellers, or inhabitants of the place, were not ordinary people. Call them how you like, but the atmosphere reflects their way of life, any happenings which may have took place. If such depiction of a scene suits your macabre needs, a sonic expression of it should too. That is what Athens based Embrace of Thorns manifested in their sophomore full-length, Atonement Ritual. Their brand of bestial black/death is truly a particular ritual in itself. From the grotesque satanic verse recitation to the ambient passages, the closer passing by the more extreme expression of its blasphemy, if you don't feel in that described cavern, you ought to at least feel like witnessing some sort of most unhealthy satanic ritual. THAT guitar tone alone evokes all the darkest of depths of the human mind. Beyond all those macabre aesthetics, Atonement Ritual is worthy of such den. The instrumentation itself goes from rather good to surprisingly good, but really, you could write the most generic, lifeless and rehashed extreme metal, and it would still look good in an appearance like that. Otherwise, there are some truly evil riffs - particularly the leads - out there going through the standards of bestial black metal as well as possessing some death metal elements scattered across. The drums blasts and fills with some good use of cymbals as expected from the genre, but the drummer does an enjoyable performance; nothing groundbreaking, but still noteworthy due to a slightly more complex playing. Don't misunderstand me though, the album isn't blasting through the whole 40 minutes, some more mid paced and almost doomy passages share the event as well. As for the vocalist, his deliveries are kind of deep, not high pitched traditional black metal vocals with some reserved leanings towards death growls. Embrace of Thorns really unearthed something here with Atonement Ritual, if only for having one of the darkest, most sterile - in the sense of devoid of life, of hope - sound around. The music itself is not worth praising daily at the altar of Satan with a cup of virgin blood, but it is some most competent bestial black/death metal. Anything the album may lack would sound trivial due to the quality of the atmosphere. If you dig anything evil, you know what to do.
