A RARE COMPLETE SET OF FOUR original HANK WILLIAMS transcription discs (8 sides) from the HEALTH AND HAPPINESS RADIO SHOW
In 1949 Hank Willliams was at a crossroads, headlining events like the widely heard and influential Louisiana Hayride radio show while scoring a few hits. By the end of that year Williams had a bunch of big hits, wowed the Grand Ole Opry with his debut performance there and began to firmly establish his position as a significant musical talent. One of the keys to his 1949 ascension was his popular, short-lived, radio program, The Health & Happiness Show, a short-lived radio show Hank Williams and his Drifting Cowboys recorded at the studios of WSM.
These October 1949 radio shows were recorded directly to acetate, which were then duplicated onto 16" vinyl discs for distribution to radio stations. This is a complete set of those 16" vinyl discs.
Consisting of eight separate shows recorded over multiple days to help promote the controversial Hadacol cure-all, the collection includes renditions of many of Hank�s most iconic songs and standards, as well as rarities, such as his only known recording of �The Tramp on the Street,� which he had included in a self-published songbook several years earlier. It was also the first recordings with Hank Williams backed by his Drifting Cowboy band, with fiddler Jerry Rivers featured prominently on multiple tracks. Even though these recording were made for a live show, some of them are of better quality than Hank�s better-known studio cuts, both due to the quality of the WSM studio, and Hank�s level of sobriety. The collection�s version of �Lost Highway� is considered the definitive one by many Hank Williams aficionados.
I am not a record collector or expert. Please see large photos for exact condition. Records lie flat, with no warping. Sides 1-6 show virtually no wear. Sides 7 and 8 do have some faint surface scuffs and scratches, but nothing that causes the record to skip.
Vinyl has lots of shine. No cracks, splits, or deep scratches noted.
All 8 paper labels are intact, with very minimal spindle marks. Notations on label, mainly documenting each time these records were played by the radio station in the 1950's.
I have only seen one other complete set come on the market in the past several years.
