Condition: The vinyl has all it's original gloss. Side 1 is EX and looks like it's barely been played. Side 2 is glossy but has a few medium scratches which causes some occasional light background pops. The cover is clean with no writing but the top seam is split all along the top and partially at the bottom. The spine is a little rough. The labels are clean but there is a mailing label on one side. It comes with a plastic sleeve. I just finished taping it and overall it sounds great. What a great looking cover.

The Five Satins were led by Fred Parris, and in the mid-50's they came up with a classic doo-wop standard, In The Still Of The Nite.

Fred Parris was born in 1936 and joined a group called the Scarletts, for which he became lead singer, in about 1954. He joined the Army and one night while on guard duty, he composed his song In The Still Of The Nite. Back home in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1956, he formed a vocal group along with Wes Forbes, Lewis Peeples, Rich Freeman and Sy Hopkins. They called themselves the Five Satins and recorded In The Still Of The Nite in the basement of their local church, St. Bernadette's. It was first released on the Standord label, and later by Ember. The song entered the top forty later that year, peaking at number 24. While it was on the charts, Fred Parris was stationed in Japan with the Army. The group re-formed with a different lineup, this time featuring Bill Baker as lead singer along with Eddie Martin, Jim Freeman, Al Denby, and Jessie Murphy on piano. Recording on the same Ember label as the original lineup, the group released To The Aisle in 1957 with Baker on lead and it became the only other top forty song for the Five Satins. Several members of the Five Satins had graduated from Hillhouse High in New Haven. Parris replaced Baker on his return from the Army in January, 1958.

The Five Satins' In The Still Of The Nite returned to the charts in 1960 and in 1961, and there were three other recordings of the song that were made by other groups. The Five Satins had some other minor hits on Ember, but as doo-wop went out of style in the early 60's, the group split up.

In 1969 Fred Parris re-formed the group with a new cast and hit the oldies circuit. This group appeared in the 1973 film that revived 50's rock-and-roll, Let The Good Times Roll. They continued to make occasional appearances. In 1982 they recorded a medley Memories Of Days Gone By that made the charts; in addition to In The Still Of The Nite, it included parts of songs that had been hits for other groups such as Tears On My Pillow, Only You, and Earth Angel.

In The Still Of The Nite continues to be a much-requested song on oldies stations throughout the country, and has sold millions of copies over the years since Fred Parris wrote it while on guard duty in the Army in 1956.

Four years ago five young talented boys got together and started a vocal group called the "Scarlets". Their recording of "I've Lost" and "Dear One", became a two sided hit on the "Red Robin" label. Their lead, who by the way wrote both sides of the disc, was a dapper kat called Freddy Paris. Following their first record, the Scarlets came out with other hits such as "Cry baby", "Love Doll" and several other hot 'n' hip items. For some reason or another the Scarlets broke up and that was sad news for a lot of rock and rollers, but fortunately Freddy Paris organized another unit called the "5" Satins. Their release of "I'll remember In the still of the Nite" was one of Rock and Roll's biggest smash hits in the past decade. The boys first recorded the hit on the Standord label and it took nearly six months before it caught the public's ear. When the Ember recording Co. heard of the action the tune was receiving, they signed the group up quicker than a flash. This hip ballad which was another Paris original was soon to hit the million mark. On the flip side "The Jones Girl" was also a "catch-on" for the big beat fans. Then the blue day came when Freddy Paris was drafted into the Army leaving behind him his career and group. He was quickly replaced by Charley Brown who without a doubt has a great lead voice.

Word has it that Freddy Paris is getting out of the Army soon and he is going to reorganize the Scarlets. With Freddie at the helm you can be sure it'll be a great group.

Some of the other members of the Satins at that time were Jimmy Freeman and Stanley Dortche who used to sing with the Nutmegs when they had their hit "Story Untold." Stanley left the Satins and now is singing with a group called the Ballads. Jimmy Freeman is the only original Satin left. The original "5" Satins all come from New Haven Conn., and all are graduates of Hillhouse High School.

The "5" Satins newest chart maker "To the Aisle" is making its move to the top, and without a doubt it's going all the way. The smooth hit is sure to spread like wild fire and the boys are helping it by touring all over the "48". Every where they go, the Satins entertain a well pleased crowd and leave them cheering for more. The boys not only sing well, but they put on a great stage show at each and every performance. They are noted to be what the hip ones call a swingin' singin' crew that always knows just what to do.
