John Coltrane – Blue Train

explorations that he would pursue over the next few years.
The Musicians
John Coltrane, tenor saxophone; Lee Morgan, trumpet; Curtis Fuller, trombone; Kenny Drew,
piano; Paul Chambers, double bass; Philly Joe Jones, drums

The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Time Out
Time Out (including the track ‘Take Five’) is musical perfection, and also one of the most popular
jazz albums ever recorded. At the time of recording in 1958 it was an avant-garde work with
unusual time signatures. It now enjoys cult status, revolutionary – yet cool and elegant.

Includes 8 page listing guide with track-by-track analysis of the recording
Cannonball Adderley – Somethin’ Else
Julian “Cannonball” Adderley picks up on Davis’ modal jazz style and adds his own inimitable bluesy exuberance, notably on the famous standard ‘Autumn Leaves’, which remains one of the finest examples of modal jazz ever recorded.
The Musicians
Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, alto sax; Miles Davis, trumpet; Hank Jones, piano; Sam Jones, bass; Art Blakey, drums
Includes 8 page listing guide with track-by-track analysis of the recording
Charlie Parker Quartet – Now’s the Time
Now’s the Time was recorded at two sessions, in 1952 and 1953, with two different lineups. Parker
was one of the key founders of the bebop style of the 1940s. He devised a new musical language
that was the inspiration for a whole generation of musicians.
The Musicians
Session 1: Charlie Parker, alto sax; Hank Jones, piano; Teddy Kotick, double bass; Max Roach,
drums
Session 2: Charlie Parker, alto sax; Al Haig, piano; Percy Heath, double bass; Max Roach, drums

Miles Davis – Kind of Blue
Kind of Blue is universally acknowledged to be the album that encapsulates the relaxed elegance
of modern jazz in the 1950s. It was recorded in 1959, and explores Davis’ fascination with modal
jazz. It sold far more copies than any other jazz record.
The Musicians
Miles Davis, trumpet; Cannonball Adderley, alto sax; John Coltrane on tenor sax; Paul Chambers,
double bass; Wynton Kelly and Bill Evans, piano; Jimmy Cobb, drums.
