Description
6 RARE AMOS 'N ANDY RADIO BROADCAST DISCS EPISODES WEEK OF JUNE 15 - 21,1929. NOT CLEAR HOW MANY WERE CUT AND HOW MANY OF ANY OF THESE MAY HAVE SURVIVED. LIKELY THE ONLY COPIES OF THESE EPISODES STILL IN EXISTENCE IN THIS ORIGINAL FORM.
I FOUND THESE HERE IN CHICAGO WHERE THEY WERE RECORDED SO MANY YEARS AGO. FROM ELIZABETH McCLEOD BROADCAST HISTORIAN AND AMOS 'N ANDY EXPERT
"the first 438 of those were recorded for syndication in 1928-29. However, only a small fraction of these -- about sixty -- are currently known to survive."
THESE ARE VINTAGE 12" 78 RPM RECORDS LIKELY USED BY RADIO STATIONS WITH PROGRAM DESIGNATIONS INDICATING SHOW DATE AND CATALOGUE NUMBERS.
THIS WAS IN ESSENCE THE FIRST SYNDICATED RADIO SHOW - DISTRIBUTED VIA RECORDS TO STATIONS. THE FIRST SHOW RECORDED IN CHICAGO MARCH 19, 1928 AT MARSH LABORATORIES - ORLANDO MARSH.
from wiki; WMAQ radio station, hired Gosden and Correll and their former WGN announcer, Bill Hay, to create a series similar to Sam 'n' Henry. It offered higher salaries than WGN as well as the right to pursue the syndication idea. The creators later said that they named the characters Amos and Andy after hearing two elderly African-Americans greet each other by those names in a Chicago elevator. Amos 'n' Andy began on March 19, 1928 on WMAQ, and prior to airing each program, Gosden and Correll recorded their show on 78 RPM Discs at Marsh Laboratories, operated by electrical recording pioneer Orlando Marsh.
