The Hesitations were formed in 1966, taking their members from a number of earlier vocal groups from in and around Cleveland, Ohio. They were fronted by George "King" Scott, who possessed one of the most recognisable leads that have ever graced a turntable. The remaining Hesitations were Phillip Dorroh, Robert Sheppard, Arthur Blakely, Fred Deal, and Leonard Veal, Jr. The legendary status held by the group today is almost entirely concentrated on their first four singles, plus the "Soul Superman" album on which they were collected. The reason is simple: the group travelled to Detroit to record them, trusting the Pied Piper/GWP team and the Terra Shirma Studios to come up with their usual high standard. Pied Piper Productions was essentially Joe Hunter, Mike Terry, Jack Ashford, and Lorraine Chandler (or 'E. Lewis', as she was often credited).
Today I'm listing all four of the above-mentioned singles, although the first of them (enclosed here) is in the form of an early 70s 'second issue' (to put it politely). "I'm Not Bult That Way" is the quintessential Pied Piper sound, sporting a crisp, uptempo beat, spine-tingling vibes, a hit-you-in-the-face lead, and wonderful burbling harmonies. What many don't realise is that the official A-side was a fairly sizeable hit, peaking at #42 on the Billboard R&B listings, in January 1967. "Soul Superman" is another on-the-fours belter, with clever lyrics that combine Klark Kent with various other super heroes/TV series from the era -namely Batman, Robin, The Green Hornet, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
This count?rfeit pressing first hit the market in 1973, and is almost identical to original black issues - except that it's pressed on vinyl, not styrene. It also uses the original A-side; later 'second issues' replaced "Soul Superman" with "Push A Ltlle Harder" - another excellent dancer from the group's second album.
Both sides have full youtube postings (not taken from the copy for sale).
The vinyl has a medium number of superficial scuffs/"spiders webs", more so on the A-side (visual condition). Both sides still play like new (sound quality).
This copy has an unusual history, in that the first owner had the artist and title blanked out in a crude form of cover-up; he also blanked out the title on the other label, but not the artists name. The tears made by the tape removal are easily visible; there are two on the A-side label, and four on the B-side label (see scan). It was one of the earliest singles I owned, and still has 'MARTIN 12' scratched into the deadwax.
This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
