Al Sears operated Sylvia from premises on Broadway, New York - the same address as his three affiliated labels: Arock, Serock, and Gator (not the same label that Lynn Varnado's "Wash And Wear Love" famously appeared on). Sears himself had the debut release on Gator, recording in 1960 as Big Al Sears, but most of the collectable stuff today can be found on Arock - titles by Gary & Gary, Tutti Hill, Gene Burks, The D.C. Playboys, Joe Bragg, and (of course) The Diplomats' "Cards On The Table". Serock boasted Theola Kilgore, who had the group's only real massive seller with "The Love Of My Man", in 1963.

As for Sylvia, she could have been Sears' wife/daughter/mistress, and the bond is further stengthened by his publishing company - Silvia Music. The label released nine singles in it's 5000 series, between 1964 and 1966, with all of them falling into the minor collectables bracket (ie under £100). Titles by Jim Randoph, The Corvairs, and Bobby Donaldson, come highly recommended, as does Joan's earlier 45 ("Anything Worth Having (Is Well Worth Waitin' For)"), and Sterling Magee's impressive stomper, "Keep On" (the flip of which also appeared on Tangerine).

Joan had a couple of further titles put out on Sylvia, when it was being distributed by 20th Century Fox, under its TCF/Fox Family banner; plus another single on 20th Century proper. A later 500 series of Sylvia was started in 1972, and had seven 45s, all of which were by Chet 'Poison' Ivey & His Fabulous Avengers, and are now collectable funk titles. To add to the story, there was an unrelated Sylvia, confusingly based on another Broadway, in Los Angeles. It had just one release, by Henry Strogin.

Despite it's relative cheapness today, at the peak of it's popularity "We Must Be Doing Something Right" received the unwelcome attentions of the 'press gang'. The youtube sound link above shows one of these count?!feits, but the copy up for grabs in this auction is a genuine Sylvia issue, with a raised 'X' in the deadwax.

B. Spoken intro, pure girl group in feel; 'lost love at the party' theme, ala "It's My Party"; crunching stompalong beat throughout; not the same song as done by Anna Craig on Decca.

The styrene has a handful of paper scuffs/"spiders webs" only, and the sound quality is virtually like new.

The A-side label is immaculate. The B-side label has some very light friction wear along part of the edge.

There are no stickers, sticker marks, tears, or writing.
