For once, here's a vintage male soul group on ABC who weren't from Chicago, and who weren't produced by Johnny Pate. Their two singles for ABC were both the work of Dennis Lambert, who went on to experience mainstream success in the 70s - firstlu with The Four Tops on their post-Motown releases for ABC's Dunhill subsidiary. He then switched allegiance to Capitol, where he penned/produced material for The Righteous Brothers (who were billed as brothers, but weren't), and all of the classics by Tavares (who weren't billed as brothers, but were). It's with the latter group that he gave us the joyous "It Only Takes A Minute", and so appears in early Take That mythology. His working partner on all of these recordings was Brian Potter.

All this was some distance in the future. Back in the mid-60s, Lambert was just starting out in the music business, working as a song-writer, producer, guitarist, and budding singer in his own right (he later partnered Craig Nuttycombe, in the Lambert & Nuttycombe duo). One of the first singles to feature his name in the credits was Lou Courtney's original version of "I Watched You Slowly Slip Away", which was co-produced by Lambert and the song's writer, Louis Pegues II. Interestingly, Howard Guyton's alternative version bears slightly different writer credits, with Teddy Randazzo and Dennis Lambert himself joining Louis Pegues. This amendment helps to explain why the two versions have a different set of lyrics.

By 1966, Lambert was at ABC, producing The Reflections. The Detroit group had just parted company with Golden World, and had also lost their original lead singer, Tony Micale, who stayed on at GW, anglicising his name to Tony Michaels. The Reflections moved to ABC with a new lead vocalist, Frank Amodeo (aka Darin D'anna). They recorded two singles: "Like Adam And Eve", followed by "The Long Cigarette". Lambert was on hand to produce both of these singles, in conjunction with Don Costa Productions.

The next group that Lambert worked with were The Spindles. Their origins were in Florida, and as far as I'm aware they didn't record outside of ABC. They debuted with "And The Band Played On", a superb example of Uptown soul, as good as anything recorded by Chicago groups like The Trends or The Marvelows. The song was written by Dennis Lambert, Larry Kusik, and Eddie Lambert, and was comped in 1984, on Kent's "Hot Chills & Cold Thrills" LP. The slightly slower flip was written by Robert Dobyne and Charles Jones, and has since become the favoured side on the dance-floor. After recording one more single (also among my eBay sales today), the group split, and are unrelated to Philadelphia group Frankie & The Spindles.

Both tunes have sound links for the uninitiated.

This single came from a 70s warehouse trawl. The vinyl is as near to mint as possible, and therefore gets my highest grading.

Both labels are immaculate, with NO deletion blobs of gold paint.
