New York producer Bob Crewe's brand of catchy 'Big City' pop soul reached it's zenith in the songs of The Four Seasons, many of which he wrote with Bob Gaudio. He also ran the Dyno Voice label and the closely associated New Voice set-up, where the biggest hits came from The Toys ("A Lovers' Concerto"), Norma Tanega ("Walking My Cat Named Dog"), and a number of raucous 'blue-eyed' R&B titles from Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. These rubbed shoulders with obscurer 45s by Jessica James & The Outlaws, Kenny Wells, The Invitations, Duff Thurmond, and the artist in the spotlight here.

I'm not going to speculate as to whether Lainie Hill and Elaine Hill were one and the same person, as is claimed by some: the two titles here were certainly the only ones that credited Lainie Hill. It was played on the scene around 1975 or 1976, and was pressed soon after, in 1977. Like many of the 'second issues' of the era, this one was pressed at Monarch Records in Los Angeles. The label reproduced the text of original demo's, although if it got the complicated design and colour a bit out. Always a popular tune with the fairer sex, "Time Marches On" sits in splendour at #93 of Kev Roberts' Northern Soul Top 500. The flip side was also recorded by Barbara Banks, and I think her version of "Ain't I Worth A Dime" came out slightly later (although I stand to be corrected). Both versions employ the same backing track and have identical female backing singers.

A. Mini anthem from the Casino's middle period; clip-clop beat; femme lead and mixed male/female backing; extremely catchy breaks; listen in full via the above youtube posting (not taken from the copy for sale).

B. The better side for many; exquisite beat ballad with breaks aplenty; very tasty pizzicato intro, and some mournful clarinet; the youtube posting above is for Barbara Banks' very similar version, which uses the same band track, as well as identical femme chorus.

This single has been mine from new. It comes in my own personalized white card cover, as well as it's white paper sleeve, complete with 5p import stamp from Colin Bee Records of Nottingham. The cost in 1977 was £1.25.

The styrene has just a smattering of sleeve scuffs/"spiders webs" (visual condition). Both sides play like new (sound quality).

The A-side label is immaculate. The B-side label has a tiny brown stain in one spot.

This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
