Instrumentals used to be a much bigger part of the Northern Soul scene, particularly in the early 70s. "Tracks To Your Mind" and "Soul Symphony" (both on eBay today) were just the tip of the iceberg. "Rat Race", "Sliced Tomatoes", "Afternoon Of The Rhino", "6 By Six", "The Champion", "Thunder", "Sax On The Tracks", "Astral Trip", "The Spy", "Tune Up", "Sea Cruise", "Harlem Rumble", "Elijah Rockin' With Soul", "They'll Be Coming", "Right On", "Soul Improvisations", "Condition Red", "Esperanto", "Bok To Bach", "Green Door", "Little Queenie", "Thumb A Ride", "Peacepipe", "Wade In The Water", "The Flasher", "You've Got To Pay The Price", "Billy's Bag", "Stick To Me", "Hold On Help Is On The Way",  "Theme From The Fantastic Plastic Machine", "Jerk Baby Jerk", "A Good Thing Going", "Brown Sugar", "Cochise", "Interplay", "Walkin' The Duck", "The Kid", "Hollywood A-Go-Go", "Suzie's Serenade", "Bird Walkin'", "Soul Step", "Zorba", "Sweet And Easy", and the multitude of variations that accompanied "What Shall I Do"/"Moonlight Music In You". A number of them had both vocal and instrumental versions that were equally popular, like "Exus Trek", "Crying Over You", Al Wilson's "Help Me", "Cigarette Ashes", "Bari Track", "Festival Time", "Sidra's Theme", Connie Clark's "My Sugar Baby", "Come On Train", "The Gallop", "The Right Track", "Have Some Everybody", "The Airplane Song",  "Rosemary What Happened", "Scrub Board", "Tough Girl", "Believe It Or Not"; while a few weren't strictly instrumentals ("Theme From Colouredman", "Ton Of Dynamite", "Control Tower", "The Joker", "The Trip", "Cat's Eyes", etc). Most of these still sound great today, while others (Lester Lanin's "Dizzy", for example) should be left well buried. As for Footsee"......

There were also notorious boo?!egs, that hid the true identity of the real artist for some time: "Supertime", "On The Road To Ruin", "Shing-A-Ling At The Go-Go", "Strings A Go Go", and others. Then there were many that didn't exist, until someone removed the vocals from a renowned track: thus we got The Fury's Band, The Music Box, The Keymen Strings, The Mirwood Horns, "Dirty Hearts (Instrumental)", The Audio Arts Strings, The Bob & Earl Band, "Let Her Go (Instrumental)", etc, etc. At this point, I must mention Simon Soussan's many contributions, from legal offerings by The Soul Fox Strings, to dubious moog monstrosities from 'The Terrifics, 'The Hotshots', 'The Soul Things', 'The Floor Shakers', etc. He also had the idea of adding new vocals to existing instrumentals, but that's another story.

Wigan Casino kept the instrumtal flag flying well into the late 70s, from the sublime ("Hey Girl" from The Peter Hamilton Generation - later the source of Levine's Venicia Wilson scam), via the passable (The Baja Marimba Band's "Along Comes Mary"), to the completely ridiculous (The Cartoon Candy Carnival's "Mickey Mouse Concerto In B Flat", wisely covered up by Soul Sam). Even in the Noughties there have occasionally been massive revivals, with The Brothers' "Are You Ready For This" and Nino Tempo's semi-vocal handling of "Sister James" proving that instrumentals haven't died - they are just slumbering.

Here's an original DJ copy of The Sound Of Lane's "Tracks To Your Mind". It's the band track to Mickey Lee Lane's "Hey Sah-Lo-Ney", with the addition of a psychedelic echoed intro, some dextrous Hammond organ, and further period keyboards. It appeared a couple of years after the vocal, on the B-side of a George McCannon pop title, and was produced by Lane himself. The break alone made it a must for nocturnal soulies, raised on a diet of hand-claps and airplane spins. It was boot?!gged around 1973, on Itzy, with the same track on both sides.

A. Get the hankies out; upbeat country pop tune; along the lines of Red Sovine's "Teddy Bear", or Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey (I Miss You)".

The styrene is close to perfect, and both sides play almost like new.

Both labels have a small amount of radio station scribble, to aid the original D.J. owner (see scan fo an example). Otherwise, they are perfect.
