What exactly is popcorn? Apart from the obvious answer (a sweet snack, usually eaten at the flicks), it's all a bit of a mystery to me - although, if I was Belgian, then it would probably be a stupid question. According to a site I've just looked at, the movement started in Ostend, during 1968. That means it's almost old as the UK-based rare soul scene, and in many ways is also similar. Many of the records looked on as classic 'oldies' by Northern Soul afficianados, are also eagerly collected on the Popcorn market - and vice versa. Rather than rabbit on about the obvious differences between the two scenes (and there are really crap records played on both), I thought I'd give an example of one side that fits snugly into both camps.

Another question - who was Billy Quarles? The Rally label was owned by Buzz Curtis, and operated from an address in Philadelphia. Perhaps BQ also came from 'The City Of Brotherly Love'. Rally also put out a 1966 single by The Agents, who must be the same outfit that recorded "Trouble", and who also came from Philly. However, I'm inclined to believe that he was based on the west coast, not the east, because he was working with two established music figures who had settled in the Hollywood/Los Angeles area. The arranger was Rene Hall, a jazz guitarist, who had worked with Sam Cooke, and later helped on Marvin Gaye's epic "Let's Get It On" album (soon after Motown had relocated to Los Angeles). Likewise, producer Joe Saraceno had made a gigantic name for himself, helping to create early work by The Beach Boys, The Routers, The Ventures, The Marketts, and Sandy Nelson, on several of their surf and/or instrumental classics. For example, he wrote/produced The Marketts' dreamy "Bella Dalena", and later produced all manner of things Hawaii-friendly, such as The Ventures' "Hawaii Five-O". As for The Ar-Kets, who warble prominently on the official A-side, they were a femme outfit, and may just possibly be related to Argie & The Arketts/Curtis Davis & The Arketts, on Ronnie (another Philly label). Of course it's all pure speculation, and of interest to anoraks only - or ebay advertisers desperate to fill some space!

This single was also given a national release, by the giant Columbia empire, and with the B-side title amended to "Quit Bringing Up What I've Done Wrong". Normally, I'd be keeping this copy, since it's a promo on it's earlier label. Unfortunately, it has a sticker mark on one of the labels - not a massive fauly to most prospective bidders, but it means that my search is still on for a true minter.

A. Mid-tempo mod dancer; twee femme accompaniment; clip-clop beat and lots of hand-claps; a dance craze tune that's a real grower; "I can't Twine, can't do no Monkey Time".

B. Effortless mid-tempo dancer; almost lazy vocals in a few plays; smooth stuff, and difficult to tell the artist's colour; definitely played around 1982, at The Top Of The World; listen in full via the above youtube link.

The vinyl is in stunning condition, and both sides play like new.

The A-side label once had a triangular sticker over all of the label insignia. It has been removed expertly, leaving only a mild stain. The B-side label has just a faint trace of ring-wear (see scan).

This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
