There's a myth in soul circles that a record has to be rare to achieve cult status. It was the case in the early 70s, when I first started attending functions, and it's even more so today. The only difference is that a scarce 45 in 1975 might have cost £100 at tops; today, some thirty-five years later, many of the country's top D.J.'s carry boxes of singles priced at ten times that amount, and often much higher. The one-off acetates and unreleased studio tapes never become available to Joe Public - at least not on that coveted 7" format. When they do, there's usually a mad scramble, particularly in the case of limited editions, such as the 100 Club anniversary singles.

It's therefore a nice change to find a prolific 60s artist who gave us a run of top quality singles that are still only at pocket money prices. The highest book value for a Jimmy Holiday single is just £40. While that might still appear a lot of money to the casual buyer, it's peanuts in the rare soul world. Holiday's more expensive items are those he recorded before joining Minit, and particularly those he cut for the KT and Diplomacy labels. The Diplomacy label was based In San Francisco, and it's earliest releases was almost entirely garage material by Jim Doval & The Gauchos. This group released seven singles on Diplomacy, and particlarly fine is their raw remake of Bo Diddley's "Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". The label was also home to The Stepping Stones, whose style (and name) was suspiciously similar to Mick Jagger and co. Their second Diplomacy release was called "Pills", so probably didn't gain them much airplay. Of the other acts, The Diplomats were un-related to the group on Arock/Wand/Minit, etc. However, you ladies might like to look up The Kilts (I knew I'd get that one in somewhere!)

Soul releases on Diplomacy were a bit thin on the ground. Apart from a nice cheapie by Sandy Borden, there are only the two releases by Jimmy Holiday, both of which are outstanding two-siders.

The single on offer here features two furious old-style Northern stompers, with oodles of driving energy. "The New Breed" was later covered by Ron Moody & The Centaurs, a copy of which will be appearing on these pages at a later date. Both sides have full youtube postings for the uninitiated. Just listen to the growling sax and wild brass break on "Love Me One More Time" - WOW!!!

The styrene is in beautiful condition, with faint "spiders webs" only. Both sides play like new.

The A-side label is immaculate. The B-side label has an area of ring-wear at the top right (see scan).

There are no stickers/sticker marks, and no writing.

This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
