Description

10" 78rpm record.

Black Swan/Paramount label #12106

Pre-War Black National Anthem/Spiritual.

"Lift Every Voice And Sing" by Manhattan Harmony Four b/w "Weary Feet" by Helen Woodruff. Recorded approx. 1922/23.

Grade V. Decent shine with fairly light even scuffing. Light groove wear. It has a very tight stress crack on the "Voice" side that has been "repaired" with epoxy as well as a crack under the label of the same side that goes just to the last few grooves that do not sound. There are two needle drops on the "Weary" side that do produce pops. Otherwise actually plays quite well.

After the NYRL purchased Pace's Black Swan operation  in April 1924, they reissued some 90 Black Swan records using this special label and containing the original Black Swan catalog number. These records are very, very scarce today.

"Lift Every Voice And Sing" was adopted in the very early days of the Black Nationalist movement as the "Negro" National Anthem and is still in use today.

Grading:

I use the following grading scale:

E+: A choice copy with no wear whatsoever.

E: Virtually no trace of groove wear with minimal traces of use and handling.

E-: Above average with a slight degree of groove wear/marks not enough to seriously detract from audio quality.

V+: Obviously well played, still enjoyable. Noticable greying in the grooves.

V: Very well worn, but still listenable. Expect noticable surface noise. Possibly some stressed grooves.

V-: Pretty well gone. May be possible to coax a little more life out of it using the right stylus.

P: Most likely unplayable. Filler copy.

On records where grades between sides are vastly different I will use a dual grade (ex. E/V-).

I have been collecting 78 rpm records for over 40 years. I try to be very conservative with grading. Most buyers should be very pleased.

Unless otherwise specified, any label issues in the photos are the result of glare from the camera flash and not on the labels themselves.

Shipping:

Records will be securely shipped using cardboard squares and foam peaunts. I've been mailing 78 rpm records for some time now and have not yet lost a record in shipping. However, the possibility for damage or loss does exist. All records are shipped in uncracked, unbroken condition unless specified in the listing. I am not responsible for any damage that occurs during shipping. Insurance is strongly recommended for purchases over $100. If you would like your purchase insured, please email me after auctions end and I will include it in the invoice.

I will combine wins to save on shipping. If you have mutiple wins, please do not pay until receiving an invoice.

I will ship to international locations, however, international shipping has become quite expensive. Please email before bidding if you are outside of the U.S. Be advised I will NOT accept returns on any items shipped outside of the U.S. Lastly, please don't ask me to falsify the value of your purchase on customs forms as I will not do so!!

Please email me with any questions. Good luck and thanks for looking. I plan on listing around 20 records of the same types every two weeks. Please keep an eye open for more Jazz/Blues/Dance band records.
