Description
HMV recorded 9 complete (more or less0 Gilbert and Sullivan Operas acoustically between 1917 and 1925, under the direction of Rupert D'Oyly Carte. Before the advent of electrical recording technology, all recordings were made acoustically, with the sound captured by a large horn and transferred mechanically to a stylus that recording the vibrations on a rotating disc. Playback was accomplished similarly.
This recording of The Mikado was made in 1917, the first of the series. This is a complete set of records in very nice condition. The album is actually in exceptionally good condition for its age, and it is original, with all the right graphical elements.
The acoustic series of G&S recordings received very limited distribution in the US and are quite rare. I am now selling off my collection and am offering nice set at a very modest initial bid price. Because I acquired these records with the primary objective of recording them, mine are probably some of the finest 78 records on eBay.
