TITLES: What A Man! / Reaching For The Moon

DESCRIPTION: As scarce as they get, this Truetone Okeh by the Missouri Cotton Pickers was not released commercially, but was given away or perhaps sold as part of the celebration of the opening of St. Louis' swanky Ambassador Hotel in August 1926. The Cotton Pickers were a fixture at Trimp's Dance Hall in St. Louis, booked for the festivities and dubbed Trimp's Ambassador Bell Hops Orchestra. The Trimp's Okeh story and the Bix Beiderbecke connection is detailed in Mark Berresford's fine VJM piece at vjm.biz/trimps-website.pdf. Note that due to the problem Okeh was having with their recording lathe on this May 1926 St. Louis session, these sides were recorded at about 88 rpm and should be played back at that speed to bring it up to proper pitch. Conservatively graded V+ copy that plays clear throughout with no distortion. Many small light scratches create some tics and crackle well below the level of the music.
