Description

Disc Records (NY) Catalog item 131 Cuban Cult Music, copyright 1947, pressed from Harold Courlander's 1940 field recordings of Afro-Cuban 'cult' music.
3 10" 'shellac' 78 rpm records; 6 sides.
Only record I dragged home in a suitcase from my father's 1930's-thru-advent-of -LP-era collection of unusual 78 records. I never saw or heard this played at home...I suspect it was more of a curiosity. He was a big fan of Cuban and other Latin music but this was less 'pop' than musicians like Miguelito Valdez. I doubt it got much play and hasn't been played for at least 50 years. The record surfaces look very good to me other than dirt that should be (properly, depending how you treat your collection) cleaned if you intend to play these, but I can't guess what kind of record life old 78 'needles' permitted.
I got home with it and learned the Smithsonian had remastered it and offers it as a CD. I don't think 1940 field recordings offer any advantage over digitally remastered...that controversial argument only applied to LP's! So this is offered as a collectible. Album artwork is by David (Living)Stone Martin, who became famous as a jazz album graphic artist.
I took photos of the record surfaces, the engraved lead-out pressing numbers and closeups of the liner notes but can't figure out how to list more than 12 photos.
I assume the safest way to ship this is to take each fragile disc out of the paper liner and wrap it in bubble wrap, to protect the disc and the sleeves from inertia (could cut through the sleeves). Sleeves are attached to the 'book-style' album and are heavier than modern paper sleeves, kind of like heavy card stock.
If you have other packaging instructions, tell me, but I am not interested in procuring a pack of 'proper' 'record mailers', as I don't anticipate selling other records.
Last one of these I saw on eBay I think sold for $56 and I'm not sure it was even complete.
So let's try a starting price of $25, including free USA shipping. I'll find the most economical and safe shipping method. I selected Media Mail, but may use something faster depending what kind of surprise that is when packed & ready to go. I cannot list this internationally without a size, weight and shipping cost, so it's listed as no international shipping. It seems like it would be costly and risky to ship elsewhere, but I'm open to the possibility (not free shipping, however).
