American Record Company 030836 10 ½” record
Play-graded using a 1970's BSR record player, 33/45/78, with a stylus for 78 rpm records.
Albert Campbell (it’s actually Billy Murray): The Girl You Love; take 2. Harry Macdonough recorded a version for Victor in November 1903; Murray’s Columbia issue of the selection (1661) shows as “approximately 1903” in DAHR. I’m going to make the guess of 1904 as the recording year as the label was not yet in existence in 1903 (to my knowledge).
This take was not listed in the splendid American Record Company discography published by Mainspring Press as of earlier this year. I did apprise the editor of its existence, and assume that it will be included henceforth.
Appearance: a decent number of small scuffs and scratches.
Plays V+; perhaps V++ Surface noise is evident, but Murray’s singing comes through loud and clear. Thankfully, no blasting on some of the higher notes, and he does hit a few in the choruses. His performance in the choruses is better than the verses. In fact, I thought at first that the song would indeed better suit Campbell’s voice, but Mr. Murray came through, as usual!
