The Original Capitol Orchestra play a spirited version of "Tiger Rag", with cornettist Vic Sell and clarinetist Tracy Mumma being prominently featured - the latter's clarinet solo is the highlight of the record. The band was mainly American, with the addition of a few European musicians (trombonist Richard MacDonald and bass player Harold Evans were British). Most of the Americans arrived in England in January 1923, though Tracy Mumma joined the band in London slightly later, in April 1923. The band held a long residency at the famous Rector's club at 31 Tottenham Court Road, London. This recording attests to the band’s ability to play jazz, in a style that is reminiscent of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings and associated mid-west bands, such as the Wolverines. In "Jazz Away From Home", author Chris Goddard compares "Tiger Rag" favourably with the Wolverines' version of the number, recorded in June 1924 (though unreleased until the 1930s), even going so far as to state that Vic Sell's playing possessed a laid-back fluidity that surpassed Bix's more "on the beat" phrasing. When playing at Rector's club, the band was known as "Rector's Capitol Orchestra", while the Zonophone recordings are labelled "The Original Capitol Orchestra". The band acquired its name as a result of the fact that several of its American musicians had played onboard the SS Capitol, a Streckfus steamboat that conducted pleasure cruises up and down the Mississippi. The SS Capitol often landed at Davenport, Iowa, Bix Beiderbecke's home town. In the summer of 1921, Bix was hired to play aboard the steamer as a member of Doc Wrixon's Ten Harmony Syncopators, replacing Emmett Hardy. Wrixon's band also included Vic Sell, John 'Budd' Shepherd and George Byron Webb, the latter two being a pianist and saxophonist, respectively, who also travelled with Sell to England as members of the Capitol Orchestra. As for Bix, his tenure with Wrixon's band was short lived, due to the fact that he did not hold a local musicians union card. His attempts to secure one were thwarted because of his inability to read music.
