Hi - I am selling a vinyl record of 'A Scarcity of Miracles' a King Crimson project with Fripp, Jakszyk, Collins, Levin and Harrison.
It is from Japan and has lyrics in Japanese and English on the inside. I ordered this a few years ago, but, alas, it has NEVER been played by me!! I've only taken the lp out for the photos for this auction. The lp is in mint condition- I don't think it has been played more than once by the original owner! The record sleeve is great with the exception of some bends in the cardboard., but otherwise I world have listed the entire package as near mint! Buyer pays shipping and it will be fully insured. This really isn’t a King Crimson release though everyone involved is part of the current line-up. Very different, laid back and atmospheric. No impossible guitar lines by Robert Fripp, he’s present with his soundscapes from which these songs evolved. None of the wild time signatures and barrage of augmented, diminished chords and lines based on tri-tones one associates with King Crimson. If your ears are stuck in the Belew years you will hate this. Someone else tagged LIZARD and ISLANDS, but I don’t really hear that. Mel Collins in almost exclusively on soprano, an instrument he didn’t even play in his first role with King Crimson. It has a jazzy vibe but that’s all it has in common with those two releases. Comparisons to Kenny G are just plain silly. Mel demonstrates a masterful command of saxophone multiphonics that one hears with masters in jazz saxophone on a couple of tunes. I hear a strong Wayne Shorter influence in Mel’s soprano playing
Frankly, and I will catch hell for this I am certain, the overall sound is closer to the jazzier stuff Toto did than Islands or Lizard. That’s not to say they sound like Toto, it was thrown out as a point of reference.
I like it. Artists need to keep things fresh. If you like the newer vocal pieces heard on RADICAL ACTION TO UNSEAT THE MONKEY MIND, LIVE IN CHICAGO and MELTDOWN IN MEXICO you will enjoy this. It could even receive spins on an adult contemporary program (stop throwing rocks at me!)
I also hear similarities to side 2 Bowie’s LOW release
I have listened several times and honestly with each listen I hear King Crimson elements that are present in this music. WONDERFUL
